Operator Selection / Assessment Form
The following chart can be used to assist the training provider when selecting an appropriate course for a candidate.
Attend A Novice Course
- Has no experience of operating a lift truck.
- Although experienced, the potential operator fails to achieve the required standard after undertaking assessment below.
Attend the Experienced Course
- Although having previously received formal training and testing, the operator fails to demonstrate sufficient ability to attend a refresher course.
- Has had no formal training but has existing operating experience on the relevant machine type and has demonstrated sufficient operating ability to attend the experienced operator course.
Attend a Refresher Course
- Has declared having received formal basic training and passed a basic skills test on the relevant machine type.
- Has certification available within 5 years.
- Has previous certification available that is over 5 years and has successfully completed the experienced operator assessment.
Attend a Conversion Course
- Has relevant certification available on a machine type suitable to attend a conversion course to the relevant machine.
1. Demonstrates the ability to use hydraulic controls effectively to
prepare for travel (should select the correct control first time and
demonstrate some degree of accuracy and efficiency).
2. Able to demonstrate the ability to approach, enter and lift a load
at low level and prepare for travel (should be fairly central to the
load, enter the load with minor adjustments and lift the load clear of
the ground. Travel position and use of the park brake and neutral is
not critical, as this will be taught in training).
3. Demonstrates effective use of the motive controls to steer
accurately in a forward and reverse direction with suitable speed
control and judgement to negotiate a simple course (open area).
(Observations before moving off may be limited. However, these will be
corrected during training).
4. Able to park the machine and leave it safe (operators may not apply
forward tilt, this will be taught in training).
